Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty of Sacramento is behind the latest push to ensure that students and teachers are unable to defend themselves in the case of an attack. This is despite the fact that there has not been a single accident or incident created by an armed teacher in California, or even a non-faculty conceal carry incident.
The bill being pushed by McCarty is AB 424, which would repeal all school administrator’s authorities to grant permission to teachers with concealed carry permits to carry firearms on campus for self-defense and defense of their students.
As it stands right now before the bill’s passage, there are currently five different districts in California that allow teachers to be armed. They include Kern High School District, Kingsburg Joint Union High School District, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, Anderson Union High School District, and Palo Cedro’s North Cow Creek School District.
As explained by The Crime Prevention Research Center’s John Lott in an op-ed in the Orange County Register, “Prior to the early 1990s, there were no state laws specifically restricting concealed carry on K-12 property. In 2015, when California became the first state in at least 40 years to pass a law restricting concealed carry on school grounds, no one could point to a single incident in California. That hasn’t changed in the last two years.”
Lott continues in the article to state that the only argument against faculty having the right to conceal carry on campus is the argument that a student or attacker would gain access to their gun, however, he points out that this has never happened. He also notes that while 24 states allow armed faculty there has only been a single incident of an accidental discharge during school hours as well, which happened in Utah during 2014 with no serious injuries reported.
Contrary to the argument made by leftists that disarming schools makes them safer, it’s important to note that the vast of mass shootings occur in “gun-free zones”, particularly when it comes to schools. A report from The Crime Prevention Research Center, in fact, shows that over 98 percent of mass-shootings dating all the way from the 1950s to 2016 occurred in “gun-free zones”, with only 1.6% occurring in areas where citizens are allowed to arm themselves.
Breitbart has also compiled a list of at least 20 times that armed citizens had prevented a crime in 2016 alone. Particularly of note in regards to mass shootings, on June 27th of 2016, a concealed carry permit holder prevented a mass shooting outside of a Playoffz nightclub in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office stated it was about 3:30 a.m. when “32-year-old Jody Ray Thompson pulled out a gun after getting into an argument with another man.” He reportedly “fired several rounds toward a crowd that had gathered out in front of the club.” Thompson shot and wounded three people when he opened fire. The individual who would have been his fourth target, an unnamed concealed permit holder, ended the incident by pulling his own gun and shooting Thompson.
As well of note, several school shootings have occurred in California and all of them have taken place in schools that had “gun-free zone” policies. In one such shooting in a San Bernardino school, seven were killed, including five students and two adults. The school being a “gun-free zone” did not appear to dissuade the attacker in the slightest. This was in addition to the infamous San Bernardino attack by ISIS supporters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, who were not reported despite suspicions because of their religion and ethnicity.
A more recent mass shooting that took place in a California school that was a “gun-free zone” occurred on March 22nd this year. In San Diego school Granite High School, by 18-year-old student Jason Hoffman who was seeking revenge on a school official. Luckily, the student missed hitting any vital areas when firing and police happened to be nearby to hear the gunshots and respond quickly. There was a firefight between Hoffman and the officers but Hoffman missed and the officers wounded him before taking him into custody. If police officers had not been nearby by mere chance, this event could have been much worse as there were no armed citizens nearby that could help defend the school.
