Democrats were quick to respond to the deadly shooting of a campus police officer Monday at Texas Tech by blaming the Lone Star State’s campus concealed carry law, but the truth proved that they were too quick to try to score political points.

Officials with the Lubbock Police Department said the incident began Monday evening during a student welfare check Holwhen Texas Tech police entered the room of Hollis A. Daniels, where they found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

KCBD reported Officers took the 19-year-old Daniels to the university’s police station for what was described as a standard debriefing.

At the station, Daniels allegedly pulled a gun and fatally shot an officer. He then fled the scene.

Police apprehended Daniels a short time later, the station reported.

Democrats wasted no time blaming the state’s campus carry law for the crime.

“Allowing concealed guns on college campuses was a dumb and dangerous idea. Stay safe, Raiders,” the Texas Democrats posted to their Twitter account.

There’s just one problem with their argument. Daniels was not allowed to have a firearm on campus.

By state law, students carrying a firearm on campus must be at least 21 and are required to have a valid Texas carry permit. Daniels was too young to get a carry permit, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.

The campus’ concealed carry policy had nothing to do with the situation, as Daniels was underage. It was illegal for him to possess a gun at all, much less have it on campus.

No matter what Democrats wanted the public to think, different laws would not have saved the life of Officer Floyd East Jr., a 48-year-old married father of two who’d worked for the department for three years, according to Fox.

While Democrats want to use this unfortunate situation to illustrate why Texas’ campus carry is a bad idea, all they really do is show how dangerous it is to disarm law-abiding citizens.

Daniels decided he was going to break the law and carry a gun, regardless of whether the law considered him old enough to have one — and regardless of whether the campus had a concealed carry policy.

The Avalanche-Journal reported that Texas Democrats apologized for blaming the state law for the crime, but it was too little too late.

Leave it up to Democrats to find a way to score political points.
