A day on the lake with family seemed like the perfect way to spend the day. The hot Texas sun was perfect, and the kids were enjoying time on the jet ski with their dad. This was the perfect summer day until something went wrong. A father of twin girls made the ultimate sacrifice to save the life of one of his girls after a freak jet ski accident left them both struggling to stay above water. In the end, the father gave his life to make sure his daughter survived the crash.
45-year-old Micheal Talley had taken the twins to the Canyon Lake for a special birthday weekend adventure. He was riding a jet ski on the lake with his daughter Daja when a sudden turn caused the craft to throw both Micheal and Daja into the water. They were both wearing life vests, but for some reason, Daja’s vest was not supporting her in the water.
According to Daja:
“My dad had made a sharp turn and we both fell into the water,” Daja said.
Daja said she was wearing a life jacket but still went under the water. After she resurfaced, she started to cry out for her dad. Daja said her dad took off his life jacket and gave it to her.
“He thought I was going to drown,” she said.
While Michael struggled to stay above water, someone arrived with another jet ski to help.
“He was saying, ‘Come on, come on.’ Then the lady was trying to let [Michael] on the jet ski and he couldn’t, and he slipped off of it,” Daja said. “I didn’t see him anymore.”
It was Michael Talley’s twin daughters’ 12th-birthday trip.
“He said that this was probably going to be the best vacation that we had yet,” Daja said.”
The rest of the Talley family watched the scene unfold from the shore. Once Micheal disappeared from view, they called for help. Authorities responded very quickly to the scene but were not able to immediately find the father of 2. As a press release from the county explained:
“MISSING PERSON ON CANYON LAKE
On today’s date around 1:45 p.m. units were dispatched to Canyon Lake just south of Potters Creek Road for a missing person. The missing person is identified as 45 year-old Michael Talley from Houston, Texas. Talley was on a jet ski with his daughter. When he made a sharp turn, both Talley and his daughter fell off. Both were wearing life jackets at the time. Talley took off his life jacket and threw it to his daughter who made it to shore. Shorty after, his family who was nearby, witnessed him go under water. The SMART Dive Team, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, and several other units are currently searching for Talley. If you have any information, please contact the Comal County Sheriff’s Office at 830-620-3400.”
After an extensive search, Micheal’s body was recovered in the lake. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and they found him very close to where he was seen for the last time.
While the loss of a parent is never easy, losing their father is even tougher on the twins as they lost their mother years before. He had been raising the girls as a single father since they were three years old after their mother died during a severe asthma attack. Micheal’s sister Teayla is expecting to take custody of the girls. As she shared:
“Everything he did, he did for these two,” Teayla said.
Now, she will raise the twins as her own.
“They’re mine now because he would do the same for me,” she added.”
The family along with the twins remember Micheal as a dedicatedwho was worked hard for his two girls. They shared his love for the girls and the joy he shared knowing they were daddy’s girls. As Daja shared “…he was an amazing and dad, and we will love him, and pray for him every day and talk to him in heaven.”
