When a hero Marine found himself in the midst of the mass shooting in Las Vegas that claimed the lives of 58 innocent people, he jumped into action. He stole a truck, filled it with the wounded, and rushed them to nearby hospitals. Now, the owner of the truck has sent him a text he won’t likely forget.

Iraq war veteran Taylor Winston credits his time in combat with aiding his quick thinking during that fateful night. He told CBS, “I saw a field with a bunch of white trucks. I tested my luck to see if any of them had keys in it. First one we tried opening had keys sitting right there.”

“I started looking for people to take to the hospital,” Winston said. “There was just too many, and it was overwhelming how much blood was everywhere.”

He then abandoned the truck that saved lives, but forgot two things, his cowboy hat… and to put the keys back.

But then, the truck’s owner, Phelps Amelsberg went looking for the man who stole his truck.

“I would just like my keys back, please. I don’t even care that the back seats ruined. You ditched the truck at town square in front of Stoney, will even buy you dinner and give you your cowboy hat back.”

Through the power of social media, the Amelsberg was able to identify Winston as the man — and sent him the following text:

The two were able to meet up, and Amelsberg recounted in later Facebook posts that he truly didn’t care about the state of the vehicle. He just was happy that it was so instrumental in saving lives.
