Many in the Democratic Party are determined to destroy President Trump’s reputation. Leading the charge is Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Unfortunately, much of his opposition is based on conspiracy theories.
Earlier this week, Schumer on the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the theory that Trump colluded with Russia during the 2016 election. If they don’t appoint one, then Democrats, lead by Schumer, will likely not vote to approve a new FBI director.
During a recent interview on CNN, Schumer told Jake Tapper that he was not opposed to blocking Trump’s FBI pick in order to get a special prosecutor appointed to investigate Russia’s involvement in the election. Specifically, when asked by Tapper about refusing to vote for whoever Trump picks, he stated, “we will have to discuss it as a caucus, but I would support that move because who the FBI director is, is related to who the special prosecutor is,” noting, “I think there are a lot of Democrats who feel that way.”
According to Schumer, the main benefit of having a special prosecutor is independence. He claimed that they would have to report to Congress instead of the Department of Justice of the White House, which he believes would prevent the Trump administration from interfering in the investigation. “The criteria for a special prosecutor, independent in making day-to-day decisions from the hierarchy in the Justice Department and the White House, can only be fired for cause, has to report to Congress, and, very importantly, can look into any attempts to thwart the investigation, are all really important criteria,” he explained, noting, “and to have that special prosecutor, people would breathe a sigh of relief, because then there would be a real independent person overlooking the FBI director.”
However, Sean Spicer, the White House’s Press Secretary, dismissedthe need to have a special prosecutor. He argued that since there is already an FBI investigation and two separate investigations in Congress, appointing a special prosecutor would be a waste of taxpayer dollars. “You have a House and Senate, a House committee, a Senate committee, the FBI [investigating] . I don’t understand why you need additional resources when you have three entities,” he reasoned. “This is a process that’s working exactly as it should,” he continued, adding, “there’s frankly no need for a special prosecutor.”
The calls for a special prosecutor began shortly after Trump decided to fire James Comey, the former FBI Director. Many were outraged by his decision. They believe that he did it to compromise the Russian investigation. Schumer is one of the leading democrats that believes the firing was suspicious. When he was first told about the decision, he called it a “big mistake.” Specifically, he said, “earlier this afternoon President Trump called me and informed me he was firing Director Comey,” adding,“’Mr. President, with all due respect, you are making a big mistake.’”
However, after speaking with Schumer, Trump him for being a hypocrite. He , “Cryin’ Chuck Schumer stated recently, “I do not have confidence in him (James Comey) any longer.” Then acts so indignant.#draintheswamp.”

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) also believes the firing was suspicious. When asked if she supported his decision to fire Comey, she said, ““no, I do not, necessarily, support the president’s decision,” adding, “under investigation, this president basically has interfered with an investigation where he may be implicated.” According to her, if Clinton would have fired Comey, it would have been perfectly fine. However, Trump firing Comey is unacceptable.
Waters and Schumer both claim that Trump compromised the FBI’s Russian investigation. However, this is completely untrue. The FBI’s temporary director made it very clear that during a recent Senate hearing. Specifically, he stated, “the work of the men and women of the FBI continues despite any changes in circumstance, any decisions,” adding, “so there has been no effort to impede our investigation to date. Simply put, you cannot stop the men and women of the FBI from doing the right thing, protecting the American people, and upholding the Constitution.”
The Democratic Party must not be allowed to waste taxpayer dollars on frivolous investigations. With regards to the 2016 election, there’s no evidence that Trump worked with Russia to win. If the left wants to launch an investigation into Trump, they must first provide proof. Any representative pushing for a special prosecutor should be voted out of office.
