New Venture Community School is under fire after Fatai Okunola, 50, slapped a student.

A Bronx middle school teacher with a checkered past was arrested for slapping a pre-teen student across the face, police said Friday.

Fatai Okunola, 50, a teacher at I.S. 219 New Venture School in Morrisania, allegedly slapped the 12-year-old student while school was in session Thursday, prompting her to report him to school staffers, who notified her parents.

Police said it was unclear whether she was struck in front of classmates. The student is the only known victim of Thursday’s assault.

Okunola was picked up at the school around 4:30 p.m. after the student’s parents called the police. He was charged with assault and issued a desk appearance ticket. He did not respond to a request for comment.

Okunola moved to New York from Africa about 10 years ago, said neighbor Jose Cruz, 73. He owns a residential building on Colgate Avenue in Soundview, where he lives in the basement.

“I don’t believe it,” Cruz said. “I’ve never heard the guy raise his voice or use profanity or anything … For him to hit a student, something must have happened.”

Okunola began working for the Department of Education in 1998. He was suspended without pay in 2006 after making inappropriate comments to students and failing to perform his proctoring duties. In 2014, he was disciplined for corporal punishment, a DOE source said.

“These troubling alleged actions are completely unacceptable,” said DOE spokesman Doug Cohen. “This individual has been removed from the school and reassigned away from students pending the resolution of this criminal matter.”
