RWC News Police Respond To Home, Elderly Man Charged Over First Date-Gone-Wrong

Newport Police were called after this date went very wrong.

A first date involving a 77-year-old Virginia man turned into a nightmare when he allegedly choked a 23-year-old woman he met an online dating website, according to reports.

Alan Schmitt was arrested following the alleged attack on the young woman he had met on dating site Plenty of Fish last week, WAVY.com reported.

The victim told police that when she met Schmitt, he was much older than what he made himself out to be and informed him that she was not interested but that they could still be friends, according to a criminal complaint obtained by WAVY.com.

The pair then went to a mall where Schmitt spent more than $400 worth of clothes on the woman at Victoria’s Secret PINK store and took her back to her Newport home, where the alleged Oct. 24 attack occurred, the complaint says.

At some point, Schmitt told the woman he wanted the clothes back, including a shirt she had been wearing, but when the woman refused to return it the situation escalated, according to the complaint.

An angered Schmitt then allegedly grabbed the victim around the neck, threw her to the ground and got on top of her, the complaint said.

When police arrived at the residence, a police officer observed “bleeding scratches” around the woman’s neck.

Schmitt told cops a different story, saying that the woman had pushed him in his face, causing him to lose his balance so he reached out and grabbed her by the neck, according to the complaint.

Schmitt was charged with felony strangling of another causing wounds or injury.
