Yellowstone’s Supervolcano is Starting to Change Shape – But Why?

Talk of Yellowstone’s supervolcano has been everywhere lately. Some assume we are about to meet our doom while others are just curious about all the recent earthquakes that have been happening, but to clear things up no, as of right now seismologists do not think it will erupt anytime soon.

Something interesting is happening to this supervolcano, it seems to be changing shape. The new ground deformation map put together by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has revealed that the terrain around the volcano’s caldron has been shifting for the past few years. The soil surrounding Yellowstone’s Norris Geyser Basin has actually moved up by seven centimeters.

This is said to be because Yellowstone caldera, much like other active volcano systems is constantly in motion. Similar patterns to this have been seen throughout the past during both the 1970s and the 1980s. Sure, there could be any number of reasons causing this change but currently none of which are cause for alarm.

Unless parts of the Park itself begin to explode and melt there is nothing to worry about right now. It seems to me the most dangerous thing about Yellowstone is not the volcano, but the fact that humans make far too many mistakes. I am sure you have heard on more than one occasion of someone falling into one of the park’s hot springs or even worse.
