The jury selection for the XXXTentacion murder suspects began.
Popular rap star XXXTentacion was robbed and murdered outside of a Florida motorcycle shop in 2018. Five years later, three suspects face trial.

The short life of emerging rap star XXXTentacion ended when two masked men emerged from an SUV that had blocked his BMW and demanded his money before one shot him. They had $50,000 in cash.

The shooting suspect, Michael Boatwright, and his alleged co-conspirators, Dedrick Williams and Trayvon Newsome, look towards the courtroom door during a hearing at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Circuit Judge Michael Usan said Wednesday that for any of the rappers to be called as a witness, the defense would have to show more than just that they were feuding with XXXTentacion.

It has been four years in the making. Mauricio Padilla said they were excited to take the first step in bringing Dedrick home. The attorneys for Boatwright and Newsome did not reply to emails. The trial was delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The teen killed his whole family. To learn about their construction business.

They argued that the evidence against one of the defendants would prejudice the other two. They argued that each defense attorney could try to establish his client's innocence or mitigate his guilt by pointing fingers at the other two suspects, which would unfairly prejudice the jury against the trio. Usan was told that any evidence presented would pertain to all three.

In this case, the defense attorneys' arguments don't outweigh the needs of the judicial economy to not hold three trials if not absolutely required.

XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, had just left Riva Motorsports in suburban Fort Lauderdale with a friend when his car was blocked by an SUV. Two masked men confronted XXXTentacion at the driver's window and one shot him. They got back into the SUV and sped away, after grabbing a Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000 cash that the singer had just withdrawn from the bank.

XXXTentacion died at the hospital. He said his name was Ex ex ten-ta-see-YAWN. He tackled issues of prejudice and depression in his songs. He was accused of severely beating and abusing his girlfriend and drawing criticism for his bad behavior.

The three defendants and Allen are linked to the killing by the store's video.

Video shows the SUV arriving at the motorcycle shop as XXXTentacion and his friend entered. Williams and Allen followed them inside. They walked back to the SUV. XXXTentacion and his friend tried to leave but the SUV blocked them. Prosecutors say Boatwright and Newsome were the men who confronted the rapper.

Boatwright had fingerprints on the driver's door of his car. The Riva Motorsports clerk identified Williams as a regular customer. Williams told investigators he didn't know the other three were planning a robbery.

The photos of Williams with Allen were found in a search of his social media. Williams told his girlfriend that Newsome was the one who shot him.

The defendants are linked to the scene by cellphone data.

Photos of Boatwright and Newsome holding up large amounts of $100 bills were found on their phones.
