Arsenal vs Newcastle United history: Head-to-head record, Premier League rivalry

Arsenal's list of Premier League rivalries stretches beyond their local scrapes with Tottenham and the infamous clashes with Manchester United during the Arsene Wenger vs. Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Gunners have launched into battles against a host of top-flight rivals with Newcastle United's return to prominence set to revive their place at the Premier League's top table.

Newcastle were title rivals to Arsenal and United in the late 1990s and early 2000s under former England boss Sir Bobby Robson, and the Magpies have picked up some famous results against the Gunners over the years.

Eddie Howe looks set to bring Champions League football back to St. James' Park for the first time in two decades, just as Mikel Arteta steers the Gunners back into Europe's premier competition. We take a look at the pair's battles in recent memory.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United in the Premier League

Newcastle enjoyed a good record against Arsenal in the early days of the Premier League, but Wenger's arrival in 1996 transformed the Gunners as a top-flight force.

Wenger lost just one of his first 10 Premier League games against Newcastle, and Arsenal's 2002 win on Tyneside included one of the greatest-ever Premier League goals.

Dutch star Dennis Bergkamp had a reputation for scoring the improbable, but his superb spin and finish against Nikos Dabizas and Shay Given was a sensational piece of skill — assuming, of course, that it was entirely intentional.

Newcastle enjoyed some solid results in the Robson era, and later under Graeme Souness, losing just once at home in Premier League action against Arsenal from 2002 to 2008.

However, it was Alan Pardew's tenure that saw the most memorable meetings between the two teams, including a 4-4 home draw in 2011, and a 7-3 Arsenal win in 2012.

In the first of those fixtures, Arsenal tore into a 4-0 lead inside 30 minutes on Tyneside, with Newcastle fans heading for the exit as a drubbing looked to be on the horizon for the home side.

Pardew managed to rally his troops at halftime, and they forced a Gunners meltdown, with Cheick Tiote famously scoring a late equaliser.

Arsenal did get their revenge in 2012, with a 10-goal clash registering as the joint-second-highest amount of goals scored in a Premier League game, with Theo Walcott bagging a hat-trick. Remarkably, the scores were level at 3-3 until the 73rd minute, after which the Gunners romped to victory.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United in the FA Cup/EFL Cup

Newcastle won their first two FA Cup clashes with the Gunners — back when the club was known as Woolwich Arsenal, at the start of the 20th century — and they also beat Arsenal in the 1952 final.

However, from there on, the Gunners have enjoyed a clear edge, winning four and drawing once in their FA Cup meetings since 1992.

The most famous cup clash came during the Gunners' memorable Premier League/FA Cup double win in 1998, as Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka scored at Wembley Stadium to seal a 2-0 win over the Magpies.

Arsenal have been dominant in the EFL Cup, with four wins from four by a combined aggregate score of 12-0.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United trophies won

Arsenal have three Premier League titles, compared to Newcastle's zero. However, the ongoing changes at St. James' Park since their Saudi Arabian-backed 2021 buyout has increased optimism of a first ever Premier League trophy landing on Tyneside in the near future.

After losing out to Manchester United in the 2022/23 Carabao Cup final, Newcastle's long wait for a trophy continues, with 1955 the last year in which they lifted domestic silverware.
