Have Brighton ever played in Europe? Europa League beckons in 2023/24

Despite losing manager Graham Potter early in the season, Brighton have enjoyed a superb Premier League campaign in 2022/23, securing a spot in the Top 6 and qualifying for Europe.

The Seagulls have locked up a spot in the 2023/24 Europa League by virtue of finishing in sixth place.

With Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi at the helm, the Seagulls have been flying high in the upper reaches of the table for most of the season, upsetting more fancied teams along the way. They left Arsenal's title hopes in tatters after handing the Gunners a 3-0 loss late in the season at the Emirates.

It's an incredible rise for Brighton, who were in the third tier of English football as recently as 2011, but now they'll be playing in Europe.

Have Brighton ever played in Europe?

Brighton have never played in a European competition since their inception in 1901.

The club have previously struggled to simply play in England's top flight and were in the third tier as recently as 2011.

Sides that finish inside the Premier League's top four automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the team placing fifth is automatically granted a spot in the Europa League

The 2023 FA Cup winner also earns a Europa League berth in 2023/24, while the Carabao Cup winner will get a place in the Conference League qualifying playoffs.

But since both of the above cup winners also qualified for Europe via their league standing — Man United won the Carabao Cup, and Man United or Man City will win the FA Cup — the next highest-placed team in the Premier League gets those European spots.

In this case, the side that finishes sixth (Brighton) will play in the Europa League, while seventh place will claim the Conference League qualifier spot.

How Brighton qualified for Europe in 2022/23

Brighton qualified for Europe for the first time this season, guaranteeing themselves a place in a European competition on May 21 and then making sure it was a Europa League spot on May 24.

De Zerbi's side finished sixth in the Premier League in 2022/23, thus laying claim to the Europa League spot.

At one point there were some who believed Brighton could even challenge for a Champions League spot with the Seagulls holding games in hand and Newcastle United and Manchester United stumbling. But that proved out of reach.

"We deserve to play in Europa League," De Zerbi said after the Europa League was secured.

And De Zerbi and manager Tony Bloom are already making plans for improvements to the squad next season.

🗣️ “Of course! We are speaking because I think next year will be more difficult. To play four competitions in our way because we would like to compete, we have to analyse the squad.”

Brighton's best Premier League season

Brighton have already eclipsed their best previous Premier League season, which came in 2021/22 under Graham Potter.

That season, the club accrued 51 points, losing just 11 league games, to finish 9th in the English top-flight.

Brighton beat that points tally in 2022/23 with games to spare, and finished higher in the table by surpassing their win total from 2021/22.

Have Brighton ever won a trophy?

While without a trophy in over a decade, Brighton have won a trophy before.

The Seagulls first honours date back to 1909/10 when they won the Southern League and FA Charity Shield in the same year.

Their most recent trophy came in 2010/11 when they were crowned champions of League One — the third tier of English football.

Brighton have never won the Premier League/First Division, Championship/Second Division, FA Cup or EFL Cup (Carabao Cup).

Brighton trophies won

  • Third Division South/League One: 1957–58, 2001–02, 2010–11
  • Fourth Division/Third Division: 1964–65, 2000–01
  • Southern League: 1909/10
  • FA Charity Shield: 1910
