Have Luton Town ever played in the Premier League? Hatters history ahead of EFL Championship playoff final 2023

Luton Town find themselves potentially within 90 minutes of the Premier League promised land after battling through to the 2022/23 EFL Championship playoff final.

The Hatters eventually missed out on automatic Premier League promotion, finishing third in the regular 46-game season, in behind champions Burnley and second place Sheffield United.

However, Rob Edwards' side have responded superbly to the playoff pressure, overturning a first leg semifinal loss to Sunderland, to seal a 3-2 aggregate win over the Black Cats.

A spot in the 2023/24 Premier League now comes down to a one off final against either Coventry City or Middlesbrough as Edwards aims to steer Luton over the final hurdle and into the top-flight.

Have Luton Town played in the Premier League?

The short answer is no, Luton have never played in the Premier League before.

The club were playing in the Conference Premier (5th tier) as recently as 2014, with promotion to the EFL Championship secured in 2019.

Luton have played in the English top-flight in their 138-year history, and they competed in the final First Division season in 1991/92, before the creation of the Premier League in 1992/93.

Luton Town's Premier League promotion attempts

Luton finished 20th in the inaugural season of the reformatted First Division in 1992/93 (the new second tier) before being relegated in 1996.

That triggered a wave of financial issues at Kenilworth Road, as the club slipped down the divisions, before eventually sealing a first promotion to the EFL Championship in 2005.

However, the progress was short lived, and they dropped back down, and into the fifth tier in 2009, making 2023 the first time they have reached the Championship playoff spots, after finishing 12th in 2021/22.
