Is Ben Foster back as Wrexham goalkeeper in 2023/24 League Two?

Ben Foster's future with Wrexham is uncertain following their promotion to League Two this season.

The 40-year-old played eight times for Wrexham to help the club in the final few months of the season. Despite playing a low number of games, he still made a big impact for the side. He saved a penalty in the 97th minute to secure a crucial 3-2 win over title rivals Notts County.

Foster came out of retirement to play for the Red Dragons, which is why it is unclear whether or not he will hang up his gloves once again or continue playing.

The Sporting News looks at what could lie ahead for Foster in the 2023/24 season.

How many games, clean sheets did Ben Foster have at Wrexham?

Foster made his return to the spotlight on March 25, when Wrexham cruised to a 3-0 win over York City. In the eight games he played this season, the National League champions managed to win five matches and only lost once.

Including his debut against York, Foster managed to keep three clean sheets in his eight appearances. He conceded eight goals, with the most coming in their 3-1 defeat to FC Halifax.

Wrexham secured promotion back to the Football League after a 15-year absence when they beat Boreham Wood on April 22. Foster conceded a goal inside a minute in that match, but Phil Parkinson's men bounced back to win 3-1.

Ben Foster Wrexham contract: Is goalkeeper still a Wrexham player?

The former England international joined Wrexham until the end of the season, with his contract officially expiring on June 30.

On his podcast, Fozcast, Foster said this about his future: "I don't really know yet. I really, really don't know yet. I've played seven games now and I part of this team, probably no other team I've been in.

"That has genuinely sparked my interest like you would not believe, where I'm genuinely going to have to sit down and really think about this now."

Foster certainly seems interested in carrying on with Wrexham, but negotiations with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be the deciding factor in the end.

Ben Foster career history

This was actually Foster's second spell with the club, having spent a season on loan with the Red Dragons in 2005. He began his career at Stoke City, but never made an appearance for them as he was loaned out to five different clubs.

The goalkeeper played for West Brom more than any other club, being loaned to the Baggies for a season before signing permanently the following campaign. He has won six trophies in his career, including two League Cups with Manchester United.

During his time at Watford, he began his podcast and uploaded videos to YouTube, including matchday vlogs that featured a GoPro in his goal. This boosted his popularity among football fans as he gave behind-the-scenes and matchday shots from a player's perspective. He has over one million subscribers and over 135 million views.
