Nottingham Forest edge out Arsenal to secure Premier League safety and crown Man City as champions

Nottingham Forest produced a fine 1-0 home win over Arsenal to preserve their Premier League status and confirm Manchester City as champions.

Taiwo Awoniyi's first-half goal was enough for Steve Cooper's side to seal three points and trigger wild scenes of celebration in the City Ground.

Arsenal's poor season run-in continued in Nottingham, as the hosts outfought them throughout the contest, with City retaining their crown before facing Chelsea tomorrow.

Forest's survival confirmation means the final relegation places will be filled by two of Leeds United, Leicester City and Everton on the final weekend of the campaign.

Everton's late equaliser tied their clash with Wolves at 1-1 and moves the Toffees to one point behind Forest.

Cooper's team are just three points above the drop zone, with Leeds United and Leicester yet to play this weekend, up against West Ham and Newcastle respectively.

45 mins from KO: Arteta wants Arsenal to channel the 'pain' of their Premier League title frustration

"Pain is part of football. There is a lot of moments to be extremely pleased with what we have done. Let’s see what we do in the next couple of games.

"Two games to go we can still be champions against the defending champions who are arguably best team in the Premier League in last few years."

1 hour to KO: TEAM NEWS IS IN!

Two changes for Arsenal as Thomas Partey and Leandro Trossard come in for Kieran Tierney and Gabriel Martinelli. Partey covers at right back, with Jakub Kiwior and Ben White shuffling across to fill in for Tierney, and Trossard starts in attack.

1 hour 15 mins to KO: Nottingham Forest are not quite safe from relegation yet. They are three points above the drop zone, so a win today would guarantee their survival.

Some day for it.

— Nottingham Forest (@NFFC) May 20, 2023

1 hour 45 mins to KO: The equation for Arsenal today is pretty simple: win, and their title hopes will be alive for at least another day; lose, and Manchester City will be champions before they even kick a ball this weekend. A draw will mean the Gunners can still mathematically catch the leaders, but it would leave City needing just one point from three games to be confirmed as champions.
