Pep Guardiola vs Real Madrid history and head to head record

Pep Guardiola faces his old nemesis Real Madrid at the 2022/23 Champions League semifinal stage with Man City, in a repeat of their meeting 12 months ago.

The Catalan coach has enjoyed some infamous battles with Los Blancos over the years, facing them during his dominant spell at Barcelona, and in his time with Bayern Munich and City.

The scrapes between Guardiola's Barcelona and Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid were full of incredible drama, iconic games and plenty of 'dark arts', across two wild seasons.

Guardiola's departure from Spanish football has added a new layer to his clashes with Real Madrid as he aims for Champions League glory in Manchester. The Sporting News looks at his record against the Spanish giants.

Pep Guardiola overall record vs Real Madrid

As a manager, Guardiola has faced Real Madrid 21 times across all competitions, with only Arsenal (27), Chelsea (24) and Manchester United (22), registering more matches against him.

The majority of those games came as Barcelona head coach – with 15 meetings as the pair fought for Spanish supremacy – followed by two clashes at Bayern, and four at City.

Overall, Guardiola has enjoyed a strong record against his old foes, but his record is signficantly poorer since leaving the Camp Nou in 2012.

  • Overall: 12 wins, four draws, five defeats.
  • For Barcelona: Seven wins, four draws, two defeats.
  • For Bayern Munich: No wins, two defeats.
  • For Man City: Three wins, one defeat.

Guardiola's Barcelona vs Real Madrid

Guardiola's move to the top job at the Camp Nou triggered an incredible period of success for Barca across four trophy-laden seasons.

The 52-year-old won three La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys and two Champions Leagues, as Real Madrid were blown away by his all-conquering possession-based side.

He won his first five league meetings against Madrid, against a combination of Bernd Schuster, Juande Ramos and Manuel Pellegrini, before Mourinho tried to slowly turn the tide after arriving in the 2010/11 season.

Despite Barcelona hammering Mourinho 5-0 in the first El Clasico meeting of his tenure, the Portuguese tactician remained calm over his uphill task, as his team began to make inroads.

Cristiano Ronaldo's extra time header sealed the 2011 Copa del Rey crown for Real Madrid's first win of the Guardiola reign.

What followed was a war of attrition, as Mourinho looked to rattle Guardiola's dominance, in the following 12 months.

Barcelona quickly got revenge for their Copa loss, with Lionel Messi inspiring them to a Champions League semifinal win over Mourinho two weeks later, on route to winning the competition. The two sides faced off six times in 2011/12, in Guardiola's final campaign in Spain, as Mourinho tried every trick in the book, to break their stranglehold.

Barcelona's 2012 Supercopa win was marred by a pitchside melee, as Mourinho poked Guardiola's assistant Tito Villanova in the eye in a nasty incident.

Nice silence there for Villanova. Here's a reminder of Mourinho poking him in the eye. You stay classy Jose.

That moment saw the El Clasico rivalry descend into a slug fest in their remaining meetings that season, as Mourinho finally won a league title, with a 100-point haul in 2011/12.

Guardiola's Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid

Guardiola's failure to win a Champions League title since his Barcelona days is well documented and he fell at the semifinal hurdle in each of his three seasons in Munich.

After storming past Premier League pair Arsenal and Manchester United in the 2013/14 season, Guardiola met Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid in the semifinals.

Despite Bayern believing they had the firepower to get past Los Blancos, Ancelotti produced a tactical masterclass across both legs, to win 5-0 on aggregate, including a 4-0 win in Bavaria.

Guardiola's Man City vs Real Madrid

Guardiola has only managed one Champions League final appearance during his time in England and Real Madrid have played a key role in blocking his European ambitions while at the Etihad Stadium.

City won home and away against Zinedine Zidane's side, at the last 16 stage, despite the two legs being split by months due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019/20.

However, Real Madrid secured a dramatic response in the 2021/22 semifinals, via a historic comeback in Madrid. City produced a superb home first leg showing, but Real Madrid's experience kept them in the tie, despite a 4-3 loss in Manchester.

Riyad Mahrez's late goal looked to have sealed an away victory for Guardiola in the reverse fixture, before Rodrygo's sensational late double sent the game into extra time, and Karim Benzema hit the winner.
