Teams that won League Cup and FA Cup in same season: History of domestic cup doubles in England
Has any team won League Cup and FA Cup in same season?

Manchester City are just one game away from potentially clinching a trophy treble this season after beating Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

The Red Devils ended their six-year wait for a trophy with victory over Newcastle United in February's League Cup final, as manager Erik ten Hag bagged his first title in English football.

However, they were unable to secure an FA Cup final derby victory, as Ilkay Gundogan inspired City to FA Cup glory at Wembley, and Pep Guardiola switches his attention to the Champions League final against Inter Milan on June 10.

Ten Hag's United will now be forced to watch on, as City attempt to match their 1999 treble win, ahead of a crucial night in Istanbul.

City have succeeded where United have failed in winning a domestic cup double, as Guardiola sealed a domestic treble in 2019, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

That domestic treble was a first in English football history, and that 2019 City also became just the fourth team to win both cup competitions in the same campaign, defeating Watford in the FA Cup final and Chelsea in the League Cup.

City's success in 2019 added their name to the list of teams who have won the FA Cup and League Cup in the same season, alongside Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

City, Arsenal and Chelsea have all managed the feat once in their history, but Liverpool are the only member of the quartet to win a 'double double' in domestic cups in 2001 and 2022.

Last team to win the League Cup and FA Cup in the same season

Liverpool followed up their 2001 cup double with two final wins over Chelsea in 2022 as Jurgen Klopp secured two trophies at the end of that campaign.

Despite losing out to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, and to City in the Premier League title race, there were still two additions to the Anfield trophy cabinet.

Neither game will be remembered as Wembley classics as both ended in 0-0 draws after 120 minutes of action.

Irish international Caoimhin Kelleher was the hero in the League Cup final, as the Reds backup goalkeeper buried their 11th penalty. His colleague, Alisson, kept out Mason Mount's spot kick to win the FA Cup final.
